About HEARefStats

This is a site inspired by the excellent Scouting The Refs, tailored specifically to look at the referees in the Men’s Hockey East Association, the NCAA Division I ice hockey conference.

The goal of this site is to present strictly factual and statistical information, without commentary. We’re self-aware enough to know that we have personal biases about particular officials, and don’t want to have that bias distorting the information.

Methodology

We gather our data from the official box scores posted on Hockey East’s official site, or the schools’ official sites if referee information is missing (games at Merrimack College frequently have that problem).

We include all in-conference games, and out-of-conference games involving Hockey East schools officiated by Hockey East officials. For example, home OOC games, the Beanpot Tournament, and the Friendship Four are all counted, but Connecticut Ice and the Ledyard Bank Classic are not, since they use ECAC referees. Away OOC games generally use referees from the home school’s conference, so they usually aren’t counted, but exceptions may happen.

In counting penalties, our method is slightly different from the box score. Where the box score counts an incident that carries two punishments (i.e. major plus game misconduct, or minor plus misconduct) as two separate penalties, we only count it as one. Misconduct penalties called separately from another penalty are counted separately.

Penalties are counted for both referees officiating the game, as the box scores do not indicate which official made a particular call.

In calculating records, games decided in overtime are counted as full wins or losses, while games decided in a shootout are counted as ties.
